About South West Rocks

South West Rocks, the largest seaside town in the Macleay Valley, combines a variety of beautiful beaches and breathtaking scenery. At the entrance of the Macleay River and only a 35km scenic drive north of Kempsey, South West Rocks is situated approximately half way between Sydney and Brisbane and half way between Port Maquarie and Coffs Harbour.

Beaches
The "Rocks" as it is affectionately known, is a mecca for fishermen, divers and surfers. One of the reasons for the popularity of South West Rocks is the variety of beaches and the fact that they face different directions - Trial Bay Beach faces west, one of the few beaches on the east coast to do so! Beaches include Horseshoe Bay, South West Rocks Back Beach and Lighthouse Beach, Little Bay, Gap Beach, North Smoky and Smoky Beach.

Attractions
Some of the beautiful features of the local Hat Head National Park include the Smoky Cape Lighthouse opened in 1891 towering over the ocean and a great place to watch for migrating whales. The historic Trial Bay Gaol built in the 1880's from locally quarried granite and the monument to the German internees, a short walk from the gaol, are both places of interest well worth visiting.
